Motherhood changed my inner world slowly. Quietly. Completely.

I became a mother so young that, in many ways, it gave me direction and purpose when I was otherwise just floating through life. And somehow, motherhood has made me feel both completely worthless and exactly who I was always meant to become.

Not at the same time. Not just once.

There were seasons where I felt like a stranger to myself. And others where I felt like the most evolved version of me so far.

People talk about the “loss of self” in motherhood like it happens overnight. Like one day you wake up and suddenly disappear.

But I don’t think that’s true. I think it’s gradual.

It’s the slow exhaustion of sleepless nights. The constant mental load. The invisible labor of remembering everything for everyone. The physical weight of breastfeeding for years. The emotional stretching that happens when your body, your time, your nervous system, and your identity no longer belong only to you.

I spent most of my second pregnancy alone while my husband was deployed. And even with a partner who is truly my best friend, parenthood still took us time to learn. To find a rhythm. To understand each other in these new roles.

And honestly? We still don’t get it right all the time.

The hardest part for me was losing pieces of the free spirit I used to be. Motherhood brought anxieties and fears I had never carried before. Loving people this deeply changes you.

But over time, something else happened too.

I got to know the new versions of myself that kept showing up as my children grew.

And maybe that’s the real transformation of motherhood.

Not losing yourself completely. But being broken apart and rebuilt over and over again.

Motherhood breaks you down to nothing sometimes. And then slowly, tenderly, builds you anew.

Since beginning my journey into motherhood, I have shared my experiences openly as I navigated through parenthood.

After training as a doula six years ago, I began supporting growing families through knowledge, care, and lived experience.

For the past five years, I have also been documenting birth through photography, quietly witnessing and preserving some of the most powerful moments in family life.

For the past year, I have been deeply focused on birth photography, and it has become clear through that work that it is ready to stand in its own identity.

And now, I’m finally giving it its own name.

Arrive Birth Photography is a documentary birth photography service within The Mother Hen Friend, dedicated to preserving the quiet, powerful, and emotional moments of labor, birth, and new life as they unfold.

This work is rooted in presence, respect, and unobtrusive observation, allowing families to remain fully immersed in their experience while their story is preserved with care.

The Mother Hen Friend will remain a space for support, conversation, and education around pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and parenthood.

The strength of a mother is usually silent.

It is quiet sacrifice. Quiet grief. Quiet resilience.

It is carrying the weight of an entire family while pretending your arms are not shaking from the heaviness of it all.

It is being the safe place for everyone else, even when you have nowhere soft to land yourself.

Mothers carry everything.

The appointments. The fears. The invisible lists. The emotional weight. The responsibility of remembering every detail for everyone. The guilt of feeling like you are never doing enough. The heartbreak of watching your children hurt. The pressure of holding it all together when you are falling apart inside.

We carry babies. Then toddlers. Then growing children. And somehow, even as they grow, we never stop carrying them in our minds, our hearts, our bodies.

Motherhood asks us to pour endlessly from ourselves. To keep giving when we are exhausted. To keep loving through pain. To keep showing up through betrayal, loneliness, grief, anxiety, survival, and impossible seasons.

And still, a mother loves with a softness this world does not deserve.

There is nothing weak about motherhood.

There is strength in the mother who gets up after sleepless nights. Strength in the mother surviving postpartum. Strength in the mother healing from trauma while trying to raise children differently. Strength in the mother who cries in the bathroom and walks back out with gentle hands. Strength in the mother doing it alone. Strength in the mother who keeps going when nobody notices how hard it really is.

Some mothers are barely surviving. Some are grieving versions of themselves they had to lose. Some are carrying silent pain while still packing lunches, kissing foreheads, answering questions, and making magic for their children anyway.

That strength deserves to be seen.

This Mother’s Day, I hope every mother knows this:
You were never meant to carry all of this alone.
But the fact that you do, day after day, with love still pouring from your heart... that is extraordinary.

She stood.
Quiet, almost still
like her body was speaking
in a language that didn’t need sound.
A wave moved through her
and she followed.
Downward.
Inward.
Open.
Her baby descending,
One breath at a time.
Hands reaching,
not to guide,
but to receive.
And in the hush of it all,
without urgency,
without noise,
her baby arrived
into the midwife’s hands
then straight to her,
as if they had both
always known the way.

It’s been quiet over here… and not by accident.

The start of this year has felt heavy in ways I don’t quite have words for yet. The kind of heavy that slows you down, pulls you inward, and asks you to just be for a while.

I haven’t had much to say, because I’ve been in it, feeling it, moving through it, trying to make sense of it.

But in the middle of all of that, there have been moments. Small ones. Soft ones. Moments where I can breathe a little deeper, where things feel okay again, even if just for a second.

This image feels like that to me.

A pause. A breath. A smile in between the intensity.
Birth has a way of reminding me that two things can exist at once, challenge and beauty, pain and peace, overwhelm and joy.

I think life is asking me to learn that lesson outside of birth right now.

So I’m here, gently finding my way back. Not because everything is "all good", but because there are still moments worth holding onto.

I witnessed first breaths, steady hands, tears, strength, surrender, and love in its most raw form.

I grew this year. I learned. I experienced births that stretched me, humbled me, and deepened my reverence for this work. No two stories were the same, and every single one was sacred.

To the families who invited me into these spaces and allowed me to document the moment your lives changed forever, I deeply thank you. There are not words big enough for that trust.

I am endlessly in love with what I do, and I could not do it without each of you.
