Planning a home birth is exciting, but choosing the right midwife can feel like a big decision. Your midwife will guide and support you during pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum, so finding someone you trust is essential.

As a doula and birth photographer in the West Valley, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside many amazing midwives in homes and birth centers. I’ve seen firsthand how the right fit creates a more positive and empowering birth experience.

If you’re preparing to interview midwives, these Tips for Interviewing a Home Birth Midwife will help you find a provider who aligns with your values and vision for birth.

1. Trust your first impressions

How do you feel when you first meet them? Do you feel heard, respected, and comfortable sharing your hopes and concerns? Your comfort level is just as important as their training or credentials.

2. Ask about training and experience

It’s okay to ask where they trained, how long they’ve been practicing, and how many births they’ve attended. If you have specific needs—like a VBAC, twins, or a history of fast labors—ask about their experience in those situations.

3. Discuss their philosophy of care

Every midwife has their own approach to pregnancy and birth. Some focus on holistic care with minimal interventions, while others combine natural birth support with more medical monitoring. Make sure their philosophy matches your preferences.

4. Talk about safety and emergency protocols

Even low-risk pregnancies can have unexpected situations. Ask how they handle emergencies, what equipment they bring, and when they would recommend transferring to a hospital. Knowing their plan will give you peace of mind.

5. Understand their role during labor

Some midwives are hands-on and actively involved in comfort measures, while others are more observant and step in only when needed. Think about which style feels best for you and your birth space.

6. Ask about postpartum care

Postpartum visits and support vary from one midwife to another. Ask how often they visit, whether they provide breastfeeding help, and how long they stay in contact after your birth.

7. Include your partner or support person

Bring your partner or main support person to the interview so they can share their perspective and ask their own questions.

8. Trust your instincts

Credentials, experience, and safety protocols matter, but your gut feeling is important too. The right midwife will make you feel calm, respected, and supported.

Finding the right home birth midwife is about more than just qualifications—it’s about connection, trust, and shared vision. Take your time, ask the questions that matter to you, and choose someone who feels like the perfect fit for your birth team.
